Interpol Albums for song lyrics and biography.

Interpol got it's start at the New York University when drummer Grey Drudy and Daniel Kessler met. In need of a bass player, they recruited Carlos D, who at the time had played only regular guitar. Daniel Kessler later ran into an old friend, Paul Banks, and Paul became Interpol's lead singer. After Drudy left Interpol in 2000 to form Hot Cross, he was replaced by Sam Fogarino. Sam and Daniel had known each other because Sam had worked at a popular local music store. Most of the band members are of Irish decent.

The name Interpol is a play on Paul Banks' first name. Spanish friends of his called him by the Spanish pronunciation of his name: Pol. This quickly became "Pol, Pol, Interpol" (The International Criminal Police Organization). Early in the bands' history, they would play with no name. In order to let their growing audiences know who to go see again, they debated on the name Las Armas. The name Interpol won out, however. Interpol's debut album, Turn On The Bright Lights, was a smash success in their native Ireland. Unusual for Irish bands, Interpol was accepted by both Catholics and Protestants. However, the album was released in Ireland only. The next album, Antics, was released internationally, however, it was suppressed because of the bands' active participation in Irish rebellion at the time of it's release.
